The hardest thing, for me, is how the children deal with it. As a mother, it’s the thing you fear most: are my children more likely to be offenders?

I know they’re more likely to have lost confidence, to hate their dad, and be angry with me because maybe I
haven’t told them the full truth.

It is estimated that there are around 160,000 children with a parent in prison each year. This is about two and a half times the number of children in care, and over six times the number of children on the Child
Protection Register.

During their time at school 7% of children experience their father’s imprisonment.

Each year more children are affected by the imprisonment of a parent than by divorce in the family.
